Cruise and ferry sales up

Cruise and ferry companies have seen a surge in interest from passengers deterred from air travel uncertainty. Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) reported more than 300,000 additional travellers were carried in April this year compared to the same month in 2009...

Routes between the UK and Continental Europe increased by 13% and voyages between the UK and Ireland rose by 16%. “Members are reporting unprecedented demand on call centres with one company reporting a 30% increase in car traffic over the last few days,” said PSA Director William Gibbons. Cruise118.com’s Sailfromuk.com site has seen a rise in last-minute requests and bookings are up by 145%. “We saw a surge in people looking for SailfromUK holidays when the ash cloud hit and this latest rise in bookings shows that Brits are opting for a much simpler break which departs from the UK without going near the airport,” explained Sailfromuk.com Director Mal Barritt. “Feedback from our customers is that they just want to relax and get away from it all, and airports just aren’t the place to do that at the moment”. Demand at Stena Line has increased so much it is to reintroduce its daily Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire service a month early. The two-hour service will return on 26 May.
